This Fall in Nova Scotia we have not experienced the significant number of COVID-19 cases as elsewhere in Canada.  Physicians across the province are playing key leadership roles in safely caring for patients during the pandemic. On October 2, 2020, Dalhousie’s Faculty of Medicine and the MacEachen Institute for Public Policy and Governance (MIPP) hosted a roundtable at which 27 people met online to discuss what went well and what lessons were identified from the health sector’s response to COVID-19. Participants included senior representatives from both the public health and healthcare systems of New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, as well as academics. NSHA Health Care Worker Self-Screening

Health care workers are required to complete the daily self-screening using the Active Monitoring Tool available on the COVID-19 Hub. Any health care worker who develops symptoms compatible with COVID-19 is directed to NOT report to work and to contact Occupational Health Safety and Wellness at 1-833-750-0632 for screening. Managers and clinical leaders will strictly enforce this requirement. Freedom of Expression and Regulated Health Professionals

Physicians have a professional responsibility to ensure their public statements do not bring disrepute upon the profession. The limits to the freedom of healthcare professionals to publicly voice opinions were recently tested in the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal. The decision calls for medical regulators to balance the rights of the physician with the interests of the public and the profession. MCC Cancels October MCCQE II Exams

The MCC’s cancellation of the October sitting of the MCCQE II has impacted physicians across the country. We recognize the concerns of postgraduate trainees, newly graduated postgraduate trainees and physicians on a Defined licence who all are required to obtain the MCCQE II.   We understand the challenges and ramifications of this examination postponement.  Those physicians impacted are assured of ongoing licensure and the ability to practise in Nova Scotia.  We have heard issues raised regarding logistical challenges as well as questions regarding the relevance of the MCCQE II.  [...]

CMA launches Physician Wellness Hub

In an effort to drive change in the culture of medicine and promote health and wellness in the medical profession, the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) has launched the CMA Physician Wellness Hub (the Hub), an online platform that provides key resources, virtual community as well as confidential support and counselling to physicians, learners and their families. Notice Regarding Attendance and Reporting at the Resumption of the Hearing Regarding Dr. Manivasan Moodley – August 26 & 27, 2020

The hearing respecting Dr. Moodley commenced on February 24, 2020, and continued until February 28, 2020.  The hearing was scheduled to resume at various times since then, but the resumption was postponed due to limitations arising from COVID-19. The hearing is now scheduled to resume on August 26, 2020, at 9:30 am at the offices of McInnes Cooper, Purdy’s Wharf Tower II, and to continue if needed on August 27.  In accordance with current Public Health recommendations, the in-person attendance will be limited to those parties and their counsel directly involved in the hearing proceedings, and individuals identified by those parties where physical distancing requirements can be met. External Moonlighting Online Information Session – Recording

At its May 29th meeting, the Council of the College approved revisions to the policy regarding Postgraduate Practising Licences for External Moonlighting. The revised policy reflects consultations undertaken with stakeholders including the Dalhousie University Faculty of Medicine. As such, the policy now aligns with training received by postgraduate trainees focused on Competency By Design as provided for in the CanMEDS competencies framework. This paves the way for PGTs from any province to apply for an External Moonlighting licence to practise in Nova Scotia.
