Prescribing Methadone – Removal of Health Canada Exemption

Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor announced March 26 the federal government will introduce regulatory amendments to the Controlled Drug and Substances Act (CDSA). Currently, physicians who wish to prescribe methadone for the treatment of pain or for use in opioid replacement therapy must apply for an exemption from the CDSA. For an application to be approved, Health Canada requires a letter of support from the College. The proposed amendments, anticipated to be in place in May, will lift the need for such exemptions. College Welcomes Immigration Announcement

The College welcomes today’s announcement by Immigration Minister Lena Diab of a new immigration stream for doctors looking to come to the province. Notice of Hearing Re-Convening Regarding Dr. Enyinnaya Ezema

A Hearing Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia will re-convene to consider allegations of professional misconduct and conduct unbecoming against Dr. Enyinnaya Ezema. The Hearing will take place at the offices of McInnes Cooper (Suite 1300, Purdy’s Wharf, Tower II, 1969 Upper Water Street, Halifax Nova Scotia) on January 12th beginning at 9:30 a.m. Hearings of the College of Physicians and Surgeons are open to the public except when, upon application by a party involved, the Hearing Committee determines that all or part of the proceedings should be closed. Revised Professional Standards Approved by Council & Retirement of Mifegymiso Prescribing Standard

At its December meeting, the Council of the College revised and approved the following professional standards and guidelines: Professional Standards Regarding the Authorization of Marijuana for Medical Purposes Professional Standards Regarding Review of Monitored Drug History Before Prescribing College Council also approved the retirement of the Professional Standards Regarding Prescribing Mifegymiso. Late Fees for Medical Licence & Corporation Permit Renewal in Effect

Medical licence and corporation permit renewal was open for the month of November. Renewals received between December 1 and December 31, 2017 are now subject to the following late fees: Medical licence renewal late fee: $462.50 Corporation permit renewal late fee: $25.00 If you are licensed to practise medicine in Nova Scotia, you must renew your medical licence. Dalhousie University – Faculty of Medicine Admissions Review Committee Report Now Available

Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine has released its 2016 Admissions Review Committee Report. The purpose of the review was to ensure that the admissions process bolstered the Faculty of Medicine’s commitment to service, excellence and broad considerations of diversity. The review committee was led by Dr. Gus Grant, Registrar and CEO of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia. The review committee included a public member and experts in the fields of medicine, law, diversity, university admissions, and undergraduate medical education.
