Nominate a Physician for the Gold-Headed Cane Award

The College’s Gold-Headed Cane Award recognizes an outstanding Nova Scotia physician who exemplifies professionalism in service to their patients and the profession in the best interest of the public.

The College’s annual province-wide award is in partnership with the Humanities HEALS Program at Dalhousie University Medical School.

Nomination Requirements

Medical License

You and your nominee must be licensed to practice medicine in Nova Scotia.

Nomination Letter

You must submit a one to two-page letter describing how the nominee exhibits outstanding professionalism to their patients and profession in the best interests of the public. The following descriptors define professionalism:

  • service to the public
  • altruism
  • excellence in practice
  • integrity
  • compassion
  • mentorship
  • continuous improvement
  • working in partnership with patients and health care team members

The nomination letter is the most important element. Please make your letter address the above descriptors by providing examples describing how the nominee demonstrates and integrates professionalism in their practice.

Accompany CV or Biography

You must include a two-page biography or CV (curriculum vitae) of the nominee

Optional Letters of Support

You may include additional letters of support from other physicians or health professionals supporting the nomination.

Unsuccessful nominations from previous years may be resubmitted for consideration. If you are resubmitting a nomination, please indicate this in your letter.
