Capacity, Competence and Character for Safe and Ethical Practice

Preamble The Medical Practitioners Regulations1 require all registrants have the current capacity, competence and character to safely and ethically practise. This is relevant at the time of initial registration or licensing, while licensed and at the time of annual licensing renewal. 

American Board-Certified Physicians: Requirements for Full Licensure

Preamble The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)1 was established in 1933 and its board certification process requires an ongoing independent evaluation to ensure clinical competence and continuing professional development. Additionally, its process ensures the board-certified physician meets the standard of practice established by their peers. Physicians holding certification with one of the Member Boards of the American Board of Medical Specialties may qualify for a Full licence.

Podiatrist Licence: Scope of Practice

Preamble Pursuant to amendments to the Medical Practitioner’s Regulations1 effective April 1, 2024, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) has the authority to regulate podiatrists in Nova Scotia.  Section 63(g) of the Regulations requires the Council to establish the scope of practice for podiatry.

Comprehensive Clinical Assessment of Practice: Criteria and Outcomes

Preamble At the Registrar’s discretion, physicians meeting certain criteria may request authorization to undergo a Comprehensive Clinical Assessment of Practice (CCAP) for the purpose of attaining long-term, renewable licensure in Nova Scotia. Depending on the licence type prior to the assessment, successful completion of a CCAP leads to a Full or Restricted licence. Physician Extender Programs – Accreditation

Preamble All physician extender programs in Nova Scotia are accredited by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College). Section 8 (1)(f) of the Medical Act1 gives the College authority to oversee and approve programs which permit others to engage in designated aspects of the practice of medicine, including provisions for supervision or other forms of accountability.
