Currency of Practice Experience

Preamble Registrants must remain qualified, competent and fit to always practise within their scope of practice. There are several ways a registrant can maintain the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience to practise safely and ethically. This policy addresses one of those ways: the currency of a registrant’s practice experience related to a defined scope of practice.

Criminal Record Screening

Preamble The Medical Act Regulations1 require all registrants to have the current capacity, competence and character for safe and ethical practise. This is relevant at the time of initial registration or licensing, while licensed and at the time of annual licensing renewal. As such, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) requires criminal record screening to assist in its mandate to protect the public interest.

Restoration or Reactivation of Licensure

PREAMBLE All registrants must hold a licence to practise in Nova Scotia. The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) recognizes there are varying circumstances that may cause a registrant’s licence to become inactive such as voluntary relinquishment or revocation. PURPOSE This policy describes the various circumstances and due processes a registrant must undertake when applying to the College to restore or reactivate a licence.

Registration Documentation Expiry

Preamble The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) collects all necessary and relevant documentation when considering an applicant for registration on the Full, Education or Conditional Medical Register in Nova Scotia. Purpose This policy describes the length of time an application form and its related documentation remain valid for licensing applications with the College.

Partial Refund of Licensure Fees for Pregnancy or Parental Leave

Preamble The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) understands that registrants may need to take a leave of absence from medical practice for pregnancy or parental leave. Voluntary Relinquishment of Licence

Preamble All registrants who wish to relinquish their licence must submit a request in writing to the Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College).
