During this time, the Supervisor will assess the physician using a variety of assessment activities which will be pre-determined by the College. General Guidelines for College-Directed Clinical Supervision

The CPSNS acknowledges the CPSO from whose source documents, with permission, this guideline was adopted.  Introduction The College, through its committees, policies and regulations, may require that a physician's practice be supervised. Changes in Physician Information

It is the policy of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia to accept changes in physician information only from the physician and in writing. Changes will also be accepted via email if the change originates from the physician email information on file with the College. The College will not accept changes by telephone or from third parties. Changes in qualifications must be substantiated with official certificates/diplomas/letters.   Review date April 8, 2004

Currency of Practice Experience

Preamble Regular clinical practice is essential to maintaining competence. There is no one standard for the minimum clinical exposure necessary to remain competent; this is influenced by physician factors, scope of practice and the practice environment. Physicians who have taken an extended absence from practice and do not clearly meet or exceed the above definition, must contact the College when applying this guidance to their individual circumstances. Clinical Assistant Program – Accreditation

Policy There must be institutional oversight for all clinical assistant programs within the institution with a senior administrative officer (e.g. VP of Medicine) identified and responsible for the oversight. There must be a central record of all clinical assistants, including their qualifications, credentials, and copies of evaluation reports, procedure certification, and satisfaction surveys. These centrally held documents must be available at the time of program survey by the College and at other times upon written requests by the College. There must be a clinical assistant program director appointed. There must be evidence that the responsible senior administrative officer reviews, at least annually, with each clinical assistant program director the conduct of the department's Clinical Assistant Program.

Policy Clinical Assistant Programs must assure uniform standards of qualification and a minimum level of competency for all clinical assistants. Program goals and objectives include: ensuring a standardized accountability framework for the conduct of the clinical assistants; supporting an employment environment for physicians in Nova Scotia who do not meet the criteria for licensure as independent medical practitioners; and assisting regional and tertiary care hospitals in the provision of patient care. Clinical Assistant Licence

Preamble Clinical assistants are registrants under the Conditional Register with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (College). A clinical assistant is not the most responsible physician (MRP) but acts in the role of physician extender in the hospital environment. All potential candidates for clinical assistant positions must have their credentials assessed and approved by the Registration Department of the College prior to accepting job offers from a Nova Scotia health authority. Guideline for the Conduct of Return to Practice Assessments

Preamble Under Section 16 (1) of the Medical Practitioners' Regulations: Before returning to clinical practice after an absence of 3 years or longer, a person must notify the Registrar of their intention to return to clinical practice in writing before they return to clinical practice; and  successfully complete a competence assessment as determined by the Registrar.  The return to practice assessment is conducted under the provisions for High Level Supervision as laid out in the "CPSNS Supervision Framework - Responsibilities and Outline by Level". Acceptable Alternatives to the LMCC

Preamble Section 19 of the Medical Practitioners Regulations states that one of the requirements for registration is "a licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada, or an acceptable alternative as determined by resolution of Council". This policy sets out the acceptable alternatives to the Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada, as determined by resolution of Council.
