Patient safety

Patient safety in Nova Scotia

Feeling safe when you visit the doctor is essential. People are often at their most vulnerable when they need medical care, and you should always feel secure and respected.

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) works with physicians throughout their careers to help them provide safe, high‑quality care. Everything we do is guided by the goal of protecting the public.

How we support patient safety

Nova Scotians deserve excellent health care, and the College serves the public by regulating the province’s physicians, surgeons, podiatrists, and physician assistants.

Our expectations of physicians

Our professional standards are the minimum requirements for safe, professional behaviour and conduct. These are not suggestions — every physician in Nova Scotia must know and follow them. Failing to meet these standards can lead to disciplinary action.

Standards are developed under the Medical Act in consultation with physicians, the public, and health partners, and are approved by the College Council before taking effect.

The College acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors.
