College announces disposition in Dr. Stani Osif case

A Hearing Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia has released its disposition in the case of Dr. Stani Osif, a family medicine specialist from Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia. On January 18, 2008, the Committee released a decision that found Dr. Osif guilty of charges relating to a disciplinary matter that constitute professional misconduct and professional incompetence pursuant to Section 66(2)(e) of the Nova Scotia Medical Act.

The disposition suspends Dr. Osif’s license to practice medicine until she has satisfactorily completed a program of medical re-education at her own expense and passes the Canadian College of Family Physicians certification examination. If Dr. Osif does not meet this obligation within two years of the disposition date, her Nova Scotia medical license will be revoked.

Dr. Osif has also been ordered to pay the College $200,000 toward its costs less the reasonable expenses incurred by her in successfully completing her re-education program.

The College acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors.
