Emancipation Day

The College joins with Nova Scotians to commemorate Emancipation Day on August 1st.

Emancipation Day marks the historic abolition of slavery by the British Parliament in 1834, ending the legal enslavement of African peoples across the British Empire.

Each year, Canadians are called to reflect upon and to address anti-Black racism and discrimination.

This day honours the strength, resilience, and enduring contributions of Black communities in Canada.

The College acknowledges that we are in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This territory is covered by the Treaties of Peace and Friendship. We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors.
