June is Pride Month

The College recognizes Pride Month and celebrates the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. Physicians in Nova Scotia have a unique role in engaging with the 2SLGBTQIA+ community by addressing its health care needs with dignity and with respect.  

External Review into Anti-Black Racism within the College

The College recognizes that racism and discrimination exist in medicine and organizations associated with medicine. Early in 2021, the College engaged an independent, external task force led by Mr. Doug Ruck Q.C. to review the College’s operations through the lens of anti-Black racism. The task force was composed of African Nova Scotians selected by Mr. Ruck. The task force has now completed its review and issued its report: From the Inside: An External Review into Systemic Anti-Black Racism Within the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia.

New College President

The College is pleased to announce that Dr. Andria MacAulay has been appointed College President for the 2022-2024 term.

Dr. Andria MacAulay is a family medicine specialist practicing in Truro. Her areas of medical interest are women’s, children’s and adolescent healthcare, as well as medical education.

Gold-Headed Cane Award 2021 Recipients

The College’s Gold-Headed Cane Award recognizes an outstanding Nova Scotia physician who exemplifies professionalism in service to patients, the profession, and the community. It is awarded as part of a co-sponsored Gold-Headed Cane ceremony in partnership with the Humanities in Medicine Program at Dalhousie University Medical School.

The College congratulates the 112 medical graduates from the class of 2022. We wish our new doctors well in the exciting new opportunities ahead.

May 1 is Doctor’s Day in Nova Scotia

The College joins with Nova Scotians in recognizing the commitment and dedication of physicians throughout the province.  Doctors’ Day was first recognized as the official day of appreciation for Nova Scotia’s medical profession in 2013. May 1 was selected as Doctors Day to mark the birthday of Canada’s first female physician, Dr. Emily Stowe. Read more about Doctor’s Day in Nova Scotia.

Postgraduate Training Licence Renewal Closes May 31

For the 2022-2023 Academic Year

Online postgraduate trainee licence renewal opens on May 2, 2022. Completion of your licence renewal form and receipt of payment is required to continue your postgraduate training program at Dalhousie University for the 2022-2023 academic year. The renewal fee is $200.

Race-based and Indigenous Identity Data 

Race-based and Indigenous identity data is essential for measuring health inequalities (also referred to as health disparities) and for identifying inequities that stem from racism, bias and discrimination. Health equity data can be used to inform actions and interventions to improve health equity among racialized groups. To harmonize collection and ensure high-quality data that is comparable across jurisdictions, CIHI released pan-Canadian minimum standards for collecting race-based and Indigenous identity data in health systems, along with guidance on their use.
