About the College

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (the College) serves the public by regulating the province's physicians, podiatrists, and physician assistants in accordance with the Nova Scotia Medical Act and its regulations.

Among other responsibilities, the College licenses physicians, podiatrists, and physician assistants, investigates public complaints, and develops professional standards and guidelines to support safe, ethical, and high-quality care.

What we are looking for

The College is seeking an individual interested in serving as a Public Representative on its governing Council. As the College transitions from the Medical Act to the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA), applicants should be aware that the successful candidate may have opportunities to continue their service during the governance transition.

We are seeking a candidate with general governance experience and an interest in how the public interest can best be served when regulating the practice of medicine.  

The following individuals are not eligible to apply, under requirements established in the RHPA that will soon be in force:

• physicians, podiatrists or physician assistants (either presently or formerly registered);
• members of boards of professional associations, or former members of such boards unless 24 months have elapsed since service on such boards;
• registrants of another regulated health profession or former licence-holders of another regulated health profession.

What you’ll be doing

The successful candidate will serve on Council and on at least one committee of Council. 

Meetings are normally held during business hours and occasionally extend into the late afternoon. The time commitment to serve on Council is approximately 20 hours of meeting time per year, plus preparation time.  The time commitment to serve on committees could range from 10 hours to 50 meeting hours per year, plus preparation time. All meeting time is compensated.

The successful candidate will be asked to represent the public perspective regarding the regulation of the medical profession. The successful candidate will serve alongside other public representative members and physicians who have been elected or appointed to Council.
