Gold-Headed Cane Award Recipient

The College is pleased to announce Dr. David Brake as the recipient of its 2018 Gold-Headed Cane Award. Dr. Brake is a Respirologist and Intensive Care Specialist. Recognized for working tirelessly on behalf of his patients, Dr. Brake has practised in Sydney for twenty years. The Hearing of allegations regarding Dr. Jacob Puthenparumpil scheduled to commence on April 24, 2019 has been adjourned. A further update on this matter will be published on the College’s website as soon as available.

Pursuant to the Medical Act, a Hearing Committee of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia will convene to consider allegations of professional misconduct and incompetence regarding Dr. Jacob Puthenparumpil. The Hearing will be held at the offices of McInnes Cooper, 13th Floor, Purdy’s Wharf, Tower II, 1300-1969 Upper Water Street, Halifax, commencing on April 23, 2019 at 0930 am and continuing thereafter as needed. Notice of Hearing Withdrawal Regarding Dr. James Leahy

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia and Dr. James Leahy have entered into an agreement to resolve the outstanding allegations against him with Dr. Leahy’s agreement to permanently retire. The College agrees that the terms of the agreement are in the best interests of the public and the profession. The College withdraws the Notice of Hearing.

Council Approves Revised Professional Standards

At its December meeting, the Council of the College approved the following revised professional standards: Professional Standards Regarding the Provision of Telemedicine Services Professional Standard Regarding Medical Assistance in Dying Physicians are expected to stay current with professional standards and guidelines. The complete catalogue of professional standards and guidelines is available any time to all physicians on the College website.

Renew Your Medical Licence and Corporation Permit Today

Annual renewal of your medical licence and corporation permit is now open online. If you are licensed to practise medicine in Nova Scotia, you must renew your medical licence. If you are a physician practising medicine under a corporation in which you are listed as a medical director, you must renew your corporation permit. Benzodiazepine Prescribers Must Register with the NSPMP

Unregistered physicians prescribing benzodiazepines must now register with the Nova Scotia Prescription Monitoring Program (NSPMP). Effective Saturday October 20th, the NSPMP will integrate benzodiazepines prescribing data into its monitoring. Benzodiazepines prescriptions will continue to be written on regular prescription pads (duplicate pads are not required). If you are one of the few physicians not yet registered, your prescriptions for benzodiazepines will be held, to the detriment and inconvenience of your patients. Please register today.
