Licence types

A Full licence lets a physician practise independently in Nova Scotia without supervision, terms, conditions, or restrictions

The College may issue a physician a Restricted licence during an investigation, after the Registration Committee reviews their case, after successful supervision on a Defined licence, or at the discretion of the Registrar

An Academic licence is a conditional form of licensure which may be issued to physicians who have been offered an academic appointment through Dalhousie University

A Defined licence is a conditional form of licensing. It is issued to physicians who don’t hold the qualifications for a Full licence

A Temporary licence is for physicians or surgeons who want to practise short-term in Nova Scotia, for up to six consecutive months

A Postgraduate Practising licence is needed for physicians in training who want to work outside their training program, known as moonlighting

A Postgraduate Training licence is an educational licence that allows physicians to train in Nova Scotia

All students studying medicine at the undergraduate level at Dalhousie University must be registered with the College
