Dr. Leslie Houck
Dr. Leslie Houck is the Department Head of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Ob Gyn) for Yarmouth and the Southwest Nova Tri-counties. She has also been Department Head of Ob Gyn in Truro, NS, in Pikeville, KY and was offered the same position while working in Bellingham, WA, before returning to NS in 2009. From 2015-16, Dr. Houck was the first Western Zone Chief of Ob Gyn (for the Annapolis Valley, the South Shore and the Southwest Nova).
Dr. Houck received a Bachelor of Science degree with Honours from Acadia University in 1977, a Master of Science degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1979, and a Medical Doctorate (MD) from Dalhousie University in 1983. She completed a Rotating Internship in 1984 and Residency in Ob Gyn in 1988, at Dalhousie University. She earned a Specialist Certificate from the Society of Ob Gyn of Canada (SOGC) in 1988, became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCSC) in 1989, completed the American Board of Ob Gyn (ABOG) Oral and Written Exams in 1998 and became a Fellow of the American College of Ob Gyn (FACOG) in 2008.
Dr. Houck did graduate research during her Senior Medical Elective at both the Middlesex and University College Hospitals in London, England. She was granted a Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation Studentship from 1979-89 and then won the Atlee Endowment Research Grant Competition. In Residency, she also won first prize in the Dalhousie University Resident Research Competition. Dr. Houck was granted a 6-month Postdoctoral Dalhousie Fellowship in 1989, for a Fellowship in Seattle in Infectious Diseases and left academic medicine without using it, for Rural General Ob Gyn practice after the birth of her second child. After having a first child in Residency, she had two more children while working in the Annapolis Valley.
Dr. Houck started her career as a full-time General Ob Gyn for 5-years in the Annapolis Valley, NS, in what is now the Western Medical Zone; then worked for 6 ½-years in Appalachian Kentucky; she also worked for a total of 7-years in Truro, NS, in the Northern Medical Zone; for another 5-years in Bellingham, WA, and has continued as a full-time Ob Gyn, from 2013 to the present, for Yarmouth and the Acadian Shores in the Southwest Nova Tri-counties; thus, working in 3 medical systems including: Canada, the US and a student elective in the UK.
Dr. Houck is interested in a variety of measures to improve patient safety, ranging from Procedural Credentialing to a single Electronic Medical Record (EMR) for each Nova Scotian. She is an advocate for vulnerable rural populations and subsequently hopes to promote physician recruitment and retention in NS. She is also interested in Canada’s dropping global Maternal Mortality and Newborn Mortality Ratio ranking since institution of the Canada Health Act in 1984, relative to the other Commonwealth Countries and to Western Europe.
One of her daughters works as a journalist, fine arts editor and writer in Toronto, Ontario; her son is an attorney in Los Angeles; while another daughter is an artist who works as a computer coder in London, England. Dr. Houck enjoys travel, renovating old wooden homes and biking to work.
